Upper room

In the upper room of the Augustinian friars’ convent, works covering the period from 1950 to 1965 are exhibited, including some original works, now only a few, by his master Giuseppe Fallani (1859-1933), an eclectic sculptor: the Venus and sketches for the competition for the Palace of Justice.

With a series of works commissioned by Bishop Cristoforo Arduino Terzi, Lorenzo Ferri enhanced the Franciscan places in the Rieti valley; here are displayed the sketches for the monument to Saint Francesco, illustrating the composition of the” Cantico delle Creature”. The sculptural group was made in travertine (1960), in La Foresta, Rieti.

The Sarcophagus of the Spouses from Caere is a replica from the original cast, realized for the restoration funded in 1951 by engineer Carlo Maurilio Lerici, who wanted a copy for the family tomb. The restoration of the missing parts was carried out by Lorenzo Ferri, who had experiences in restoration since he was a student of Fallani and was well-known in the archaeological environment.

In 1946, Ferri won the competition for the renovation of the Nativity Scene in Sant’Andrea della Valle with a project drafted together with the architectural student Alberto Carlo Carpiceci. The project was composed by a scenography and sketches of eight painted statuettes. Some sketches of the Nativity Scene are exhibited here: the detail of the Madonna’s Face, before the reworking, and the plaster sketch of the Indian Page, which became Indonesian, cast in bronze for the museum in Jakarta For the twentieth anniversary of Indonesia’s independence (1964), in order to decorate the interior of the Mausoleum, Lorenzo Ferri was in charge to coordinate and oversee all phases of the work, reworking the architect Sudarsono’s designs.
